Rick Starr, Ph.D.
Marine Advisor, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties
Research
In the past 20 years, Starr’s work has focused on the biology and ecology of marine species that are harvested as fishery resources, and finding research-based solutions to coastal problems.
Currently, Starr is helping to evaluate the marine reserve concept as a tool for managing fisheries. While marine reserves appear to have the potential to conserve stocks of fish, there are some critical variables that influence their effectiveness. For example, estimates of species’ home-range size and frequency of movements are vital elements to determine an appropriate design for a marine reserve that would help species conservation. However, little is known about typical movements of
many coastal species therefore tools and techniques are needed to determine the home ranges and frequency of movements of key
species of coastal fish.
Education and Outreach
Starr is involved in developing educational materials, advising stakeholders on ways to find creative solutions to coastal issues, forging partnerships with schools and organizations, and participating in community committees and workshops.
