Delta Science Council

Delta Science Fellows Program for
Graduate Doctoral Students
and Postdoctoral Researchers

On February 3, 2010, under Senate Bill No. 1, the new Delta Stewardship Council was created as an independent state agency tasked with developing the Delta Plan for achieving the coequal goals of providing a more reliable water supply for California and protecting, restoring and enhancing the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta ecosystem. Under the same bill, the CALFED Science Program became the Delta Science Program, reporting to the new Council.

The Delta Science Program was established to develop scientific information and synthesis for the state of scientific knowledge on issues critical for managing the Bay-Delta system. That body of knowledge must be unbiased, relevant, authoritative, integrated across state and federal agencies, and communicated to Bay-Delta decision-makers, agency managers, stakeholders, the scientific community, and the public.

Beginning with the class of 2003, the Delta Science Fellows Program (previously known as the CALFED Science Fellows Program) has paired graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with Bay-Delta agency scientists and senior research mentors. Fellows work on collaborative data analysis and research projects applicable to the California Bay-Delta system. The Science Program has funded 43 Fellows projects, totaling over $6 million dollars. The goal of funding this research is to invest in knowledge that will fundamentally advance the understanding of the complex environments and systems within the Bay-Delta system to aid policy-makers and managers, and to train the next generation of research scientists for water issues in California.
