CALIFORNIA SEA GRANT DIRECTOR
The University of California (UC) System through its San Diego campus invites applications for the full-time position of Director of the California Sea Grant College Program. The program is the largest of the 32 Sea Grant programs throughout the nation and is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, State of California, and University of California.
California Sea Grant funds coastal and ocean research, outreach, and education activities at more than 30 public and private institutions throughout California. Headquarters for the program are located at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) on the campus of the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla. California Sea Grant has an Advisory Board with broad representation, and the Director is a UC employee, formally reporting to the Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of California Sea Grant provides overall leadership for the development, evaluation, and administration of the research, outreach, and education activities funded by the program. California Sea Grant administers a total annual budget of about $12 million from a wide variety of sources.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants for the position of the Director of California Sea Grant should have the following skills, knowledge, and abilities:
- A record of research accomplishments in a Sea Grant-related discipline;
- A demonstrated record of progressively responsible managerial and administrative experience;
- Knowledge of scientific research and development with corresponding expertise in a subject area(s) funded by California Sea Grant, such as coastal ocean issues, fisheries, aquaculture, marine policy and law, and marine biotechnology;
- Substantial experience with the development of grant proposals, proposal review, proposal administration, and federal funding procedures;
- Familiarity in working with user groups served by Sea Grant programs including state, federal, and regional agencies, the private sector , academic institutions, and non-profit organizations;
- Understanding of the National Sea Grant Program mission and vision;
- Effective leadership skills that include strong and capable verbal and written communication abilities with both scientific/technical and lay audiences;
- A doctoral degree or equivalent experience in a Sea Grant-related discipline.
Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications and are based on the UC San Diego pay scales.
