Carrie Pomeroy, Ph.D.
Social Science of Fisheries, Marine Ecosystems and Ocean Management
Pomeroy studies the social, cultural and economic aspects of marine fisheries issues but especially those of particular interest to the Monterey Bay area.
Pomeroy and NOAA Fisheries economist Cindy Thompson are co-principal investigators on the California Fishing Communities Project, which includes projects to develop baseline data on the commercial and recreational fisheries and fishing communities of selected Central and Northern California ports. Funding sources for these projects include NOAA Fisheries, California Sea Grant Extension Program and the California Coastal Conservancy.
With UC Santa Cruz professor, Mary Silver, she is co-principal investigator on a California Sea Grant project to characterize the Santa Cruz Wharf recreational fishery in ecological and human terms, and to assess the extent to which anglers may be benefiting from nutritional value of local fish or their risk of exposure to domoic acid toxins from the consumption of their catch.
Pomeroy and economist Michael Dalton, of NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center, collaborated on a California Sea Grant study that estimated the value added to fish landings at Monterey Bay area ports.
Pomeroy coauthored the 2007 California Sea Grant publication, "Commercial Fisheries of the Santa Barbara Channel and Associated Infrastructure Needs" with Carolynn S. Culver and John B. Richards, and the 2008 publication, "Santa Cruz Harbor Commercial Fishing Community Profile—California Fishing Communities Project" with Melissa M. Stevens.
Pomeroy is editor of the Sea Grant Extension Program quarterly newsletter, Sea Grant Fisheries.
