Culver’s primary focus is on sustainable fisheries and fishing communities, while protecting and enhancing the natural resources of the area. Selected projects include:

Commercial Fisheries of the Santa Barbara Channel and Associated Infrastructure Needs, summarized in a publication coauthored with John B. Richards and Caroline M. Pomeroy

Fisheries Youth Journalism Academy, (see first article in Sea Grant Fisheries fall 2007 newsletter). This journalism academy was conducted in collaboration with the Ventura County 4-H Youth Development program

Giant keyhole limpet distribution, abundance and reproductive capacity
Profiling of the Santa Barbara Channel crab trap fishery

Collaborative research regarding the Channel Islands Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): Movement of kelp (calico) bass and recruitment of invertebrates (e.g., urchins, crabs) inside and outside MPAs

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) (as they pertain to fisheries and fishing communities):

  • Using incentive-based removal programs (bounties, commercial fisheries) for management of AIS
  • Minimizing the spread of invasive species via boating and fishing activities
  • Development and training of a rapid response and monitoring network for quagga mussels and other AIS
  • Santa Barbara Channel oil and gas platforms and AIS
  • Evaluating the potential for predation on salmonid eggs and larvae by the invasive Chinese mitten crab
  • Recruitment monitoring guide for the Chinese mitten crab
